Mahinda Rajapakse Leading in Sri Lanka election

Incumbent Mahinda Rajapakse has taken a strong lead in Sri Lanka’s bitterly fought presidential election, as armed troops surrounded the hotel of his main rival.

Election officials said Mr Rajapakse, who is being challenged by his estranged former army chief Sarath Fonseka, had won 60 per cent of the vote with about a fifth of the ballots counted.

Janeshwar Mishra Socialist Leader of Veteran dies

Lucknow, Jan 22 (PTI) Veteran socialist leader and Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha member Janeshwar Mishra died of heart attack today in Allahabad.

77-year-old Mishra, who is survived by two daughters, was ill for a long time and died in hospital where he was admitted following complaints of chest pain last night.

KOLKATA: The condition of CPM patriarch Jyoti Basu turned extremely critical on Saturday with all his vital organs affected and “there is little hope of any good result”.

“All five vital organs — heart, lungs, kidney, brain and liver — are not functioning properly,” Dr Ajit Kumar Maity, Basu’s personal physician and a memberof the medical board at AMRI hospital, where he is admitted, told PTI.

Doctors said Jyoti Basu’s Condition Extremely Criticle

KOLKATA: Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu’s condition was “extremely” critical on Saturday and he was put on maximum ventilator support, doctors attending on him said.

“Basu’s condition is extremely critical and he has been put on maximum ventilation today. His blood pressure had dropped last night (Friday) and later it was managed with high volume of medicines,” the afternoon medical bulletin released by the AMRI Hospital said.

Jyoti Basu’s Condition Still Very Critical

KOLKATA: The condition of 95-year-old CPM leader Jyoti Basu today turned “very critical” and he was showing signs of multi-organ failure, his personal physician Dr A K Maity said.

Basu’s condition has turned very critical and he is heading for multi-organ failure with dysfunction in cardiac and renal system and stiffness in his lungs,” Dr Maity, who is also a member of the medical board of AMRI Hospital, where he is admitted, told newsmen.
